Journey with Howard Chandler
Journey with Howard Chandler is an interactive mobile application for iPhone and iPad built around intimate interview footage of Holocaust survivor Howard Chandler. Through the app, users ask Howard questions and hear his firsthand account of his life, from his childhood, through the Holocaust, and beyond. The project was created with Classrooms Without Borders to carry the heart of their Poland Personally study seminar, Howard's story, presence, and spirit, beyond the trip itself.
I directed this project as creative director, shaping how a recorded interview could feel like a living conversation and guiding the team from concept through production.
An Interview You Can Ask
Rather than watching a linear documentary, users select the questions they want to ask. Howard answers in his own words, in his own voice. Designing this structure meant thinking carefully about how people naturally move through a conversation with a survivor: what they ask first, what they hesitate to ask, and how one answer leads to the next.
In Poland and in the Classroom
Educators and students on the Poland Personally seminar use the app to engage with Howard's story on site, weaving his account into the places they visit. Back home, teachers bring the app into their classrooms, where students interview Howard virtually in a setting that feels personal rather than archival.
Why This Matters
Howard's impact on educators, students, and the CWB community comes from meeting him in person. This project exists so that impact does not end with the trips he can attend. It preserves not just his testimony, but the experience of asking and being answered.
